Lorry Owner Torches Own Vehicle To Avoid Rtd Seizure

A lorry owner set his own vehicle on fire in a desperate attempt to prevent it from being seized by the Terengganu Road Transport Department today. COURTESY PICKUALA TERENGGANU: A lorry owner set his own vehicle on fire in a desperate attempt to prevent it from being seized by the Terengganu Road Transport Department (RTD) today.
The incident occurred when a team from the state RTD stopped the lorry for inspection in front of a school in Kuala Nerus at around 1.30pm.
Terengganu RTD director Zamri Samion said checks revealed that the driver was underage and that the vehicle's motor licence had expired for more than two years.
He added that the lorry had also not undergone a Puspakom inspection since 2023.
"We decided to seize the lorry.
"However, when the owner later arrived at the scene, he refused to cooperate and set the vehicle on fire in an attempt to obstruct our officers from carrying out their duties," he said in a statement today.
Initial investigations showed that the lorry belonged to a company with six active summonses, while the driver had four summonses.
Zamri said the recorded offences included driving without a valid licence, no insurance coverage, an underage driver below 17, and two cases involving illegal vehicle modifications.
He said RTD would continue to take stern action against anyone who acts outside the boundaries of the law, in line with the Road Transport Act 1987.
The case has also been referred to the Labour Department, in addition to a police investigation for obstructing a public servant in the performance of official duties. - NST
