Kg Sg Baru Even If Past Govt Approved Current Leadership Can Cancel
PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the current government has the power to act on the land acquisition in Kampung Sungai Baru, even though the issue originated during the previous administration.
Tuan Ibrahim noted that the much-discussed matter is not new but has been ongoing for some time.
“This is an old issue, not something that just happened… an old issue that we need to review.
“The previous government, even if it approved (the project), the current government has the power to cancel it… If we disagree with past decisions, we can correct them,” he said when asked to comment on the land acquisition that began under the PN administration in 2021.
He said this at a press conference after officiating the PAS Supporters Assembly Convention (DHPP) at Dewan Gandhi in Sungai Petani, Kedah, today.
Earlier today, lawyer N Surendran, who represents several residents opposing the acquisition, urged the eviction operation to be suspended to allow further discussions with government representatives.

Lawyer N Surendran (centre)Surendran also criticised Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa, accusing her of attempting to absolve the government of responsibility in the process.
“It wasn’t the court that forcibly seized residents’ properties. It was the government.
“The court had no choice after the government invoked the Land Acquisition Act 1960 in 2021 in the interest of the developer,” he said.
Fate of residents
Tuan Ibrahim, who was also the environment and water minister in 2021, stressed that the fate of the residents appealing in court should be the main concern.
“The residents have filed an appeal in court, so why can’t the developer and the government wait for the decision?

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man“They are appealing in the Court of Appeal, yet their homes are being demolished… what if the court accepts their appeal and the houses are already gone?
“That’s their request. We also raised this issue in the context of the legal rights still available to the residents,” he added.
The residents’ appeal is scheduled to be heard at the Court of Appeal on Oct 3. - Mkini
