Save Sabahans From Floods Cancel Malaysia Day Bash State Dap Tells Govt
Sabah DAP has called on the federal government to cancel Malaysia Day celebrations in Penang tomorrow to focus on relief and recovery efforts in the state, which is being hit by floods and landslides.
The Sabah government has called off celebrations in Kota Kinabalu in response to the disaster.
As of writing, over 360 people have been displaced by the floods in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang, while one person has been killed by a landslide.
A landslide had also knocked down a transmission tower, resulting in widespread power disruptions.
"Sabah DAP emphasised that in order to truly honour the spirit of Malaysia Day, these disasters must be recognised as a national-level crisis," state party chief Phoong Jin Zhe said in a statement today.
"The party stressed that unity and patriotism are not expressed merely through parades or ceremonial events, but through decisive action, compassion, and solidarity with fellow Malaysians in distress," he added.

Phoong cited the precedent of Kuala Lumpur cancelling Merdeka celebrations after a tragic sinkhole incident in 2024, as well as Selangor calling off state-level Aidilfitri celebrations after the Putra Heights blaze.
He also called on state and federal agencies to intensify efforts to assist victims in Sabah and minimise further hardship.
Over 100 families affected
Meanwhile, as of 8am today, 415 flood victims from 113 families are at two temporary relief centres and one permanent relief centre in Sabah.
The State Disaster Management Committee said 155 people from 51 families are currently at the Selagon permanent relief centre in Beaufort, which has been operating since Sept 9.

“The other two centres are Sekolah Kebangsaan St Paul, Kolopis in Penampang, which is housing 59 people from 19 families, and Dewan Huguan Siou, which has 142 people from 32 families,” Bernama reported the agency as saying.
The committee stated that the number of evacuees at SK St Paul has been increasing due to continuous rain since last night, while the numbers at Dewan Huguan Siou are on the decline.

“A total of 22 villages have been affected by the floods, 14 in Penampang and eight in Beaufort,” it added.
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds for Sabah’s interior districts - namely Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau, and Tambunan - as well as the west coast areas of Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, and Kota Belud. - Mkini
