Authorities Close Box Printing Firm After Pollution Found
A box printing and manufacturing business in Beranang was sealed and ordered to shut down following the discovery of blue-coloured water in Sungai Kabul yesterday afternoon.
State Public Health and Environment committee chairperson Jamaliah Jamaluddin, said the factory, located in the Bukit Mahkota Industrial Area, is also under investigation for polluting water sources under Section 79(4) of the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Enactment 1999.
She said prompt action was taken by Luas in coordination with the Environment Department (DOE) and the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKJ) after blue-coloured water was found in a main sewage trench (manhole) near the Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) Sewage Treatment Plant.
“During the joint investigation, several containers of dye waste, believed to be printer ink, were found at the factory, which specialises in box printing.
“Traces of the same blue-coloured substance were also discovered in the factory’s washing area, matching the colour seen in the sewage trench and main toilet of the premises,” she said in a statement today.
Selangor Public Health and Environment committee chairperson Jamaliah JamaluddinJamaliah said Luas had confirmed that the blue-coloured water detected in an unauthorised pipe bypass and the sewage trench originated from the same source of pollution.
She added that all findings have been handed over to the National Water Services Commission (Span) for further action, while Luas will continue monitoring to prevent a recurrence.
The swift action, Jamaliah added, successfully prevented contamination of Sungai Kabul and averted any disruption to the Semenyih River Water Treatment Plant (LRA), located 16.3 kilometres away.
“This discovery also helped trace the source of several previous incidents of blue water pollution in Sungai Kabul,” she added.
