Go After Bogus Doctors Dentists And Beauticians Performing Illegal Procedures Moh Told
MCA has commended the swift and decisive action taken by the Health Ministry and the Immigration Department in shutting down 10 illegal health clinics in Kuala Lumpur which were allegedly operated by foreign nationals.
“This is a strong step in ensuring the safety and well-being of the Malaysian public and demonstrates the government’s commitment to tackling unregulated healthcare practices,” commented the party’s deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
Dr Mah was commenting on a Bernama news report on Saturday (Jan 25) about the emergence of fake clinics and counterfeit doctor certificates.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail was quoted as saying by the news agency that Malaysia’s healthcare sector, particularly in Penang, Melaka, and Johor, has attracted significant attention from neighbouring countries, especially Indonesia.
Saifuddin also said the high demand has led to issues such as fake clinics and counterfeit doctor certificates.
Bogus treatments
Dr Mah said in addition to cracking down on illegal health clinics, there must be more focus on addressing other concerning issues such as non-medical or bogus doctors offering unauthorised medical treatments and beauticians carrying out illegal surgical procedures like implants and injections.
According to him, these practices should only be performed by trained medical professionals registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and have a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC).
“We also call for stronger action against untrained ‘backyard dentists’ or illegal dentistry who offer cheap services or specialist treatments to unsuspecting patients who want to avoid paying or are unable to afford professional fees,” Dr Mah stressed.
“The Dental Act 2018 (Act 804) provides for the establishment of the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and the Malaysian Board of Dental Therapists, Professional Qualifying Examination as part of the registration process for dentists, dental specialists, and dental therapists, whereby only qualified, competent, and registered practitioners are allowed to provide dental services.”
He said likewise, sterner action should be taken against any medical or dental practitioner found to be selling medical certificates (MCs) when the individual is perfectly fit for work and healthy, adding that such actions bring the medical profession to disrepute in addition to affecting staff production.
“It is deeply disconcerting that the so-called clinics raided by MOH and the Immigration Department personnel were found to be stocking unregistered medications and fake medical equipment, with treatments being provided by unqualified individuals,” he continued.
“Such practices not only endanger public health but also contribute to a culture of unsafe and unregulated healthcare.”
Meanwhile, Dr Mah urged the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal healthcare activities to the authorities.
“It is vital that people seek healthcare services only from recognised and registered facilities to ensure they receive safe and quality care,” he stated.
“Any efforts by MOH and other authorities to safeguard public health requires unparallel cooperation and support because as Malaysia progresses towards a fully developed nation, upholding high standards in medical practice across Malaysia is paramount.” – Focus Malaysia
