When Dap Interferes In Islamic Affairs Hadi Shares His Thoughts
DAP leader Nga Kor Ming, in referencing the administration of Caliph Umar Al-Khattab as an example of accountability and integrity, may have inadvertently slighted PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
In his latest article on Berita PAS titled "When DAP Interferes in Islamic Affairs", the veteran politician appeared to critique DAP’s interpretation of Islam, including its understanding of Islamic history, despite expressing openness to such engagement.
Although he did not name Nga directly, Hadi stressed that the interpretation of Islam must be done with “honesty and sincerity”, aiming to seek truth and goodness rather than searching for flaws without valid and in-depth arguments.
Hadi emphasised that a comprehensive understanding of Islam must encompass its entire teaching, which differs from the general concept of "religion" in many other languages.
"Furthermore, the history of Islam should be studied starting from the time of the Prophet Muhammad, who produced caliphs, just rulers, and successful leaders in various fields, ultimately contributing to the flourishing of Islamic civilisation and its significant impact on the world,” he added.
Hadi stressed that all of this must be studied from authentic sources: the Quran and the Sunnah (statements and actions of the prophet).
He warned that without these genuine sources, any interpretation would be incomplete and inaccurate, potentially distorting Islam’s true essence.
Cautioning against the dangers of incomplete or incorrect information, Hadi highlighted that such misunderstandings could misrepresent Islam and its followers.
‘Correct me if I’m wrong’
Last week, Nga, who is also the housing and local government minister, encouraged Malaysians to correct him if he made any mistakes while performing his duties.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor MingIn his New Year's speech at the ministry, the DAP leader, who often finds himself in PAS’ crosshairs, stressed the importance of honesty and courage in acknowledging and addressing errors.
Following the speech, Nga’s office issued a statement where he referenced Chinese classics, Islamic history, and Indian folklore to underscore the importance of integrity and unity.
"According to Islamic history, the son of Caliph Umar Al-Khattab used public resources to purchase camels and then sold them for a profit.
“Upon learning of this, Umar ordered his son to return all the profits to the state treasury. This is a clear example of accountability and integrity in managing public assets," Nga stated.
‘Don’t selectively cite Islamic history’
In response, Hadi explained that the history of Islam cannot be selectively cited, nor should it be confined to a single era.
"For example, citing only the era of Caliph Umar Al-Khattab or Umar Abdul Aziz, without considering the broader context of the Prophet Muhammad’s era, fails to capture the full scope of Islamic governance,” he remarked.
He further said that the position of Islam in Malaysia is the right of its adherents and that the special privileges for Malays and bumiputera are based on historical and demographic considerations, with Islam as the religion of the Malays, who form the majority of the population. - Mkini
