Hadi Remains Essential For Pas Say Party Leaders
Although Abdul Hadi Awang appears frail, leaders said party members still relied on him to lead and unite Muslims. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Several PAS leaders have dismissed allegations by an analyst claiming that Abdul Hadi Awang was no longer suitable to continue as the party’s president, saying his leadership is essential
PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah said Hadi’s capability in leading the party is unquestionable, citing the Marang MP’s charisma, knowledge and experience.
“Although he appears frail, members still rely on him to lead the party.
“However, it is up to his discretion and wisdom to decide whether to follow in the footsteps of Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat or continue leading the party in its efforts to take over Putrajaya,” he told FMT.
Nik Aziz, a former PAS spiritual leader, was the longest-serving Kelantan menteri besar after helming the state from 1990 to 2013.
He stepped down as menteri besar due to health concerns. He died at the age of 84 on Feb 12, 2015, after years of battling prostate cancer.
A newspaper yesterday published an analyst’s comments suggesting that Hadi is no longer suitable to lead PAS, especially with the significant challenges ahead of the 16th general election, citing his health as a concern.
The analyst noted that Hadi’s health condition is no secret as he has been receiving hospital treatment over the past few years.
PAS ulama council chief Ahmad Yahaya emphasised that Hadi’s leadership is crucial to steering the party through the country’s turbulent political landscape.
He added PAS scholars were confident that Hadi’s knowledge is invaluable for ensuring the continued strengthening of Islamic principles in Malaysia.
“Hadi not only leads the Islamic movement in Malaysia but also serves as a key reference for Islamic movements worldwide,” the Pokok Sena MP added.
He also said PAS scholars remain committed to supporting Hadi’s vision of Muslim unity, which they see as vital for advancing the Islamic struggle and ensuring political stability.
Under Hadi’s leadership, PAS achieved its best performance in GE15, winning 43 parliamentary seats — the highest among all parties — and governing four states: Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu.
The party is expected to hold its internal elections later this year. - FMT
