Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says Umno has to ‘go even against the flow’ to prioritise the interests of the people and country.PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied that the party’s decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was to gain power.
In a Facebook post, Zahid said Umno could not enable the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government’s failures.
“If we are thirsty for power, this is not the way. It would be better to cling on to power that we already have,” he said.
“Umno must prioritise the interests of the people and country, even if it has to go against the flow.”
Zahid noted that Umno had been accused of playing politics although it was the PN administration that lacked “political will” to save the people.
He also said Umno was often blamed for PN’s failures, pushing its president’s personal agendas and talking like the opposition, when the party had been the one to speak up for the people.
Zahid said it was time for adjustments to be made, so the people’s aspirations can get back on track as soon as possible.
“The country needs to be restored immediately. The situation must be rectified from the top,” he said.
Muhyiddin had appointed Ismail Sabri Yaakob as his deputy, and Hishamuddin Hussein as the new senior minister for security on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before a high-level meeting of the Umno Supreme Council meeting at its headquarters.
Zahid later announced that the party was formally withdrawing its support for Muhyiddin and also called for his resignation. - FMT
