PETALING JAYA: Jakel Group says it was its own decision not to resort to legal action over the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple.
The textile company sought to clarify a speech made by Jakel Group managing director Faroz Jakel earlier today, saying his remarks were spontaneous and not aimed at blaming anyone, particularly federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
Jakel said Zaliha did not “stop” the company from pursuing legal action and that Faroz did not intend to pass any blame to the minister.
“The decision to not proceed with any legal action against any party was our own decision, following discussions with our legal advisers and after considering a peaceful resolution that would be beneficial for all.
“Zaliha only presented her views on the possible legal and social implications if the matter prolongs,” it said in a statement.
Jakel also said a snippet of Faroz’s speech had been cut and spread without context, causing inaccurate interpretations and unsettling reactions from the community.
“We hope that all parties will not play up this issue anymore. Let us preserve our nation’s harmony, exercise mutual respect, and prioritise unity in our multiracial and multireligious society,” it added.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the temple committee had agreed to move 50m away to a new 4,000 sq ft site, matching its current size. Jakel previously offered to pay for the relocation.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim attended the groundbreaking ceremony of Jakel’s Madani Mosque today, where he said the resolution over the temple’s relocation was a win-win solution thanks to compromises made by the parties involved.
He later stopped by the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple where he was welcomed and shook hands with its officials. - FMT
