Zaliha Stopped Us From Taking Legal Action Against Hindu Temple Says Jakel
(msn):Jakel Group managing director Faroz Jakel today revealed that the company had considered legal action against the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple, but was advised against it by federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
The Hindu temple occupies part of the land owned by Jakel, where the company intends to build the Madani Mosque.
The proposed relocation of the temple to make way for the mosque had sparked public backlash.
Speaking at the mosque’s groundbreaking ceremony today, Faroz said Jakel had waited 11 years to begin construction but encountered multiple obstacles.
“But federal territories minister (Zaliha) stopped us, saying it would cause racial tension,” he said in his speech.
Instead, she advised him to take the matter directly to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for a resolution.
Faroz said efforts to build the mosque on a site measuring 12,142 sq ft began in 2009 with discussions between Jakel and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
“As a result, an official offer letter from DBKL was issued on Aug 6, 2012, followed by a 10% deposit payment on Aug 8, 2012. Subsequently, in 2014, the sale and purchase agreement with DBKL was signed, and the remaining payment was settled.
“In July 2019, Jakel submitted an application to the federal territories Islamic religious department (Jawi) for the construction of the mosque. After 24 days, on July 26, 2019, the company received Jawi’s approval.
“The same year, an application for a development order was submitted to DBKL and approved on Feb 12, 2020. On June 17, 2021, DBKL granted approval for the building plan. This approval has also been extended multiple times to date,” he said.
Zaliha announced on Tuesday that the Hindu temple would be relocated 50m away from its current location to make way for the construction of the mosque.
The minister said that the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple’s committee had agreed to move the temple to the new location measuring 4,000 sq ft, matching the temple’s current size.
