Vinosiny S Family To Take Legal Action Against Uum
The family of the late S Vinosiny is taking legal action against Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) for negligence which resulted in the death of the 20-year-old accounting student, said the family’s lawyer M Manoharan.
He said the family would claim damages from the university as there is clear evidence of negligence.
“We will definitely sue the university and will wait for the post-mortem report. Whatever it is, Vinosiny died at a very young age. We do not want the same incident to happen to others,” said Manoharan during the meeting of UUM management with the family in Klang this afternoon.
In the meeting, the deceased father R Sivakumar Rajoo also expressed the same view to the UUM vice-chancellor Haim Hilman Abdullah following the latter’s apology.
“I will fight for justice. I will do what I need to do. I will fight for my daughter, for her soul and the future of the children,” Sivakumar said.
He also told Haim that he will depart to Sintok, Kedah this Thursday to give a police statement and that he wants to hold a simple prayer ceremony in his daughter’s hostel room.
Haim, who sat next to Sivakumar, quickly assured him that the university will not hinder his decision and pledged to give full cooperation to the family.
UUM’s visit
Sivakumar shared during the meeting how UUM was his daughter's first choice when applying for higher education because the information system syllabus was included in the accounting course.
“When her application was accepted, she was really happy because she wanted to be an accountant. But now her dream will never come true,” he said, his voice low.
Eight UUM management officers, including the principal of the student’s hostel Inapsis Sime Darby, Mohd Fairus Abd Majid, were present in the meeting, which lasted for about 40 minutes.
During the visit, Haim repeatedly expressed his condolences and apology to the family as he was also saddened by Vinosiny’s death.
Vinosiny died in her dorm room at UUM's Sintok, Kedah campus on May 21.
The accounting student was suspected to have suffered a fatal electric shock, something which the family claimed was backed up by injuries on her body and the post-mortem findings.
UUM has been accused of not being forthcoming regarding the circumstances of her death.
Her father has lodged a police report against the university, citing possible negligence. - Mkini
