Trilingual Signboard Skip The Double Standards Dap Youth Tells Fadhli

DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong urged PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari to cease his double standards and practise good politics.
This came after Fadhli made an issue out of Ayer Tawar Wet Market’s signboard, which comes in Malay, Chinese and Tamil.
Citing the Teluk Intan Wet Market as an example, the DAP leader said he had proposed for its signboard to have three languages when he was the chief whip for the Teluk Intan Municipal Council in 2019.
He said all council members agreed to it, including those from Perikatan Nasional.
“The signboard has been there since 2019 with no issues. The wet market is patronised by all communities and it gets very busy the week before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
“After Teluk Intan, the same idea was implemented in Ipoh and Taiping - where Bahasa Malaysia is used as the main language followed by others, which applies to the Ayer Tawar Wet Market too.
“My advice to Fadhli is to inject noble values when doing politics. Don’t forsake national harmony just to gain popularity and cheap publicity.
“And remember that your party once celebrated diversity when it was part of the then-Pakatan Rakyat pact,” he said in a statement today.
On Feb 18, Fadhli took to Facebook to mock the Housing and Local Government Ministry over the trilingual signboard.

“Just one question. Is it necessary for the signboard to be trilingual?
“And would it become the ministry’s policy to put signages in three languages on all of the government’s official premises later? Appreciate your answers,” said the Pasir Mas MP.

Unimpressed, Woo said the trilingual signboard does not negate the fact that Bahasa Malaysia remains the country’s national language.
He added that no political party has ever questioned Bahasa Malaysia’s position and the authorities would have taken action if there were quarters who did so.
“Besides, we never questioned why certain quarters used Chinese characters on the arch at the entry of Dataran Cheng Ho in Kelantan whether it was a government policy or otherwise.
“That’s because we all have common sense and understand the fact that Malaysia is a multi-racial country and we must celebrate diversity,” the Perak Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, Consumer Affairs and Chinese New Villages committee chairperson said.
