Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has hit back at former Malaysian ambassador to the United States Nazri Aziz, saying that the party’s youth wing of today are not bootlickers.
This came after the Padang Rengas Umno division chief dismissed Akmal as a future prime ministerial candidate and said the youth leader did not represent the majority voice of the party.
In response, Akmal (above) retorted that Umno Youth has a duty to the country to protect Islam and the Malay race.
"If you want to be a bootlicker, go ahead. Don't compare yourself to us," he told Nazri, who was the Umno Youth deputy chief in 1993 and held the acting chief post from 1994 to 1996.
Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported Nazri as saying that his focus upon his return from the US is on supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and ensuring the PKR president will remain in Putrajaya after the 16th general election.
Ex-law minister Nazri AzizAsked whether his concerns on the lack of a potential successor for Anwar extended to within Umno, Nazri said, “(Can) you tell me who? Akmal? You tell me who."
In a jab at Akmal, Nazri pointed out that the Merlimau assemblyperson represents only “one quarter” out of four Umno wings, thus, the latter’s views on various issues should not be regarded as a majority voice.
‘You’re not in America anymore’
Akmal responded by asking Nazri if the latter represents the majority of Malays instead.
"Maybe you have forgotten that you are not in America anymore because your contract was not renewed.
"I want to remind you that you are now in Malaysia where the majority race is Malay and Islam is the federal religion," he said on Facebook.
With Nazri’s stint in Washington DC over, Akmal snidely suggested that the former six-term Padang Rengas MP next become the ambassador to Myanmar.
Earlier this month, Nazri returned to Malaysia, denying that he was being “recalled” before the end of his tenure.
The former law minister explained that as a politically appointed ambassador, he had signed a two-year contract with the Foreign Ministry. - Mkini
