Rare Tribute From Perlis Mufti We Criticise Chinese Schools But What S The Quality Of Tahfiz School Kids

PERLIS mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin a.k.a. Dr MAZA who has occasionally ruffled feathers of non-Muslims has recently taken to task tahfiz school founders who run what he deemed as half-baked educational establishments.
Caveating that he is not anti-tahfiz school for they encourage the children to memorise the Quran nor is he criticising tahfiz schools across the board, Dr Maza said the mushrooming of tahfiz schools in recent times warrants profound attention.
“When ustaz graduates with the gift of the gab find themselves jobless or unable to land a teaching job after returning from Egypt or any other countries overseas, they tend to resort to opening tahfiz schools,” he snubbed in his Dr Maza Channel on YouTube.
“They’ll gather a group of pupils to set up a tahfiz school before promoting it on big scale via their ceremah sessions by attracting parents from big cities like KL.
“When their schools’ enrolment eventually climbs to the hundreds or thousands, they’ll arrange for far from perfect boarding accommodation and classrooms but never forget to first equip themselves with a car.”
Equating such shoddy teaching facility to “cheating public property”, the Islamic scholar, preacher, writer and lecturer who has served as Perlis mufti since Feb 2, 2015 urged the Education Ministry to take measures to curb such menace given “the victims at the end of the day are Muslims themselves”.
“We tend to criticise Chinese schools when we should actually give them credit for ensuring their schools are able to deliver the highest quality in terms of teaching environment and products of their education,” praised Dr MAZA that even tahfiz school critic Siti Kasim felt compelled to post his video on her Facebook page.

“This enables them to produce pupils with extraordinary brilliance … while we criticise them, we should look into ourselves for entrusting our own children with an ustaz who can hardly focus on his school’s development because he’s busy giving ceramah everywhere.”
Such lack of focus, according to Dr MAZA, leads to the rise in the number of bully, torture, s*d*my or s*x*al harassment cases at tahfiz or religious-oriented schools yet little attention is paid on combating such incidences by the school management.
“With such poor-quality education given majority of tahfiz schools are only meant to fulfil the personal desire of their founders, the school leavers hardly excel in their SPM or are equipped with little knowledge,” lamented Dr MAZA.
“Undeniably, the victims are Muslims themselves … these so-called tahfiz school products are the ones who are likely in the future to declare others as infidels or to insult and condemn people of other faith.”
Added the 54-year-old first degree holder in Arabic and Shariah from the University of Jordan:
Clad in robe and serban, the founders go around amassing the wealth of others yet unable to harness quality in the children entrusted to them.
“On the other hand, parents from city who face rising education cost might think that enrolling their offspring in a calmer rural surrounding can reduce their expenses while enabling them to better memorise the Quran.
But they will be in for a rude shock when their kids return home ill-equipped with Quranic knowledge, having little hadith foundation or even poor in their maths or possess little or no knowledge of history, physics, chemistry, add maths and eventually ending up as scum of society.
This is a phenomenon that I (seriously) want to address whether one agrees or disagrees. – Focus Malaysia
