Ramkarpal Calls For Tenure Security Following Dbkl Mayor S Exit
PARLIAMENT | Ramkarpal Singh (Harapan-Bukit Gelugor) urged the government to ensure tenure security for mayors if Putrajaya is unable to reinstate local council elections in the near future.
This is after Maimunah Sharif was recently replaced as Kuala Lumpur mayor, just slightly over a year after taking up the job.
Ramkarpal said that Maimunah’s sudden exit had raised questions about the transparency of the appointment and dismissal process of local authority heads.
“Among the issues that have arisen as a result of the development, is the government or the Housing and Local Government Ministry prepared to review the requirements for local government elections?
“This is so that we have a more transparent system or process in the appointment of mayors and also the termination of the mayor’s duties if local government elections cannot be realised in the near future.
“This step is important to ensure that someone holding the position cannot be removed without first going through due process,” he said during the debate on the Supply (Budget) Bill for the Housing and Local Government Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat, today.

Former Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah SharifMaimunah was appointed as Kuala Lumpur mayor on Aug 15, 2024, to replace Kamarulzaman Salleh, who had retired.
However, Maimunah’s tenure was shortened and she took up a job as Petronas’ property adviser. She was replaced by Fadlun Mak Ujud.
Fadlun had previously served as the president of Putrajaya Corporation.
Special tribunal
On that note, Ramkarpal called for the establishment of a special tribunal to decide on the dismissal or termination of mayors to prevent arbitrary actions.
“This tribunal should also be considered to prevent any arbitrary termination of employment. So, I would like to ask the ministry whether it will conduct appropriate studies on the matter,” he said.

Ramkarpal also extolled Maimunah’s credentials, describing her as a qualified figure based on her academic background in urban planning and her long experience in local government service, including her role in the Penang Municipal Council before leading the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The DAP MP said Maimunah had proven her leadership skills as DBKL recorded RM27.6 million in surplus after experiencing deficits for two consecutive years. - Mkini
