New Mayor For Kl Soon As Maimunah Reassigned Sources
Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif is set to be "reassigned" to a new duty soon, according to sources close to Putrajaya and the city's administration authority.
It was still unclear what led to the change, as Maimunah, who is the city's first woman mayor, was appointed to the office slightly over a year ago.
The mayor remained tight-lipped when contacted, saying she had "no comment" at this juncture, while the office of Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa has yet to respond to Malaysiakini queries on the matter.
However, a source close to Maimunah's office poured cold water on the question of whether she had resigned or had her contract shortened by the government.
"...I can assure you it has nothing to do with shortening (of contract) or the minister.
"It's a reassignment, meaning she will be in another part of the government," said the source, who also denied that Maimunah resigned from the post.

The individual claimed that the reassignment came as Maimunah had completed her tasks early, and it is a positive development for the outgoing mayor.
Malaysiakini was informed that Maimunah's supposed reassignment would be officially announced this Friday.
Maimunah was appointed as the Kuala Lumpur mayor on Aug 15, 2024, replacing Kamarulzaman Salleh, who was on compulsory retirement.
Now 64, the urban planning professional had previously served as the executive director of the UN-Habitat based in Nairobi, Kenya for six years and was the first Asian woman to hold that position.
Before that, she served as the Penang City Council mayor, the Seberang Perai Municipal Council president and the Malaysian Local Authorities Association president. - Mkini
