SEPANG: Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Malaysia on Sunday (Oct 5) for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The special aircraft carrying Shehbaz and his delegation landed at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), at about 9.46pm, where they were received by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Shehbaz then inspected a guard of honour comprising 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, led by Captain Nor Saifullah Mahmad @ Mohammed.
Wisma Putra, in a statement, said the visit was a reciprocation of Anwar's official visit to Pakistan in October 2024, and Shehbaz was accompanied by Cabinet ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
The Pakistani leader will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex, Putrajaya, on Monday, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister.
According to the statement, both leaders are expected to review the progress of bilateral relations and explore new avenues for cooperation between Malaysia and Pakistan, particularly in trade and investment, the halal industry, education, tourism and defence.
They are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
In addition, both leaders will witness the exchange of five memoranda of understanding (MoU) in the fields of tourism, higher education, halal certification, prevention and eradication of corruption, small and medium enterprises, as well as an Exchange of Notes (EoN) in diplomatic training.
Shehbaz will also present Anwar with an Urdu version of the book "SCRIPT: For a Better Malaysia."
An official dinner in honour of Shehbaz will be held at the Seri Perdana Complex.
Both prime ministers are also scheduled to attend the Pakistan-Malaysia Business and Investment Conference.
"The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit," the statement said.
Malaysia and Pakistan established diplomatic relations in 1957, with ties elevated to a Strategic Partnership in March 2019.
In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Pakistan reached RM8.07bil (US$1.76bil), an increase of 25.5% compared with 2023.
Malaysia's main exports to Pakistan include palm oil, petroleum and chemical products, while imports from Pakistan consist of agricultural produce, textiles, apparel, footwear and petroleum products. - Bernama
