Meanwhile, the World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 celebrations and the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025 will also be held for three days starting tomorrow, further cementing Malaysia's name on the global tourism stage.
Themed "Malaysia Truly Asia" and "Surreal Experiences", VM2026 aims to bring the world to explore the true soul of Malaysia through its cultural uniqueness and natural beauty.
Based on unique cultural experiences, VM2026 emphasises the cultural diversity and heritage that make Malaysia a unique and harmonious destination, while also showcasing the natural beauty and ecosystem diversity the country offers.
An international atmosphere will be felt with the presence of over 150 representatives and delegates from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) tomorrow night.
To enliven the world-class event, the Melaka government, in close cooperation with UNWTO and the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, has organised a variety of other programmes that are sure to captivate both locals and tourists.
The International Kite Festival will fill the skies of Melaka, while traditional zapin and other heritage performances will be presented by over 3,000 participants, further enlivening the state's cultural heritage.
The Melaka Konda Kondi Festival 2025 will bring a nostalgic touch of traditional games to everyone.
Additionally, the Melaka Entrepreneurs' Carnival 2025 will also be held and is expected to bring together over 60 local entrepreneurs and introduce business matching sessions with a transaction target of RM10 million.
Through the organisation of WTC 2025 and WTD 2025, themed "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation", the state government aims to make a name in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) through two main categories, namely, the Largest Simultaneous Zapin Performance in a Single Event in Malaysia and the First Konda Kondi Competition in Malaysia.
History is also in the spotlight with the exclusive exhibition "The Historical Maritime Exhibition of a World Naval Hero: Enrique de Malacca", which highlights the story of a local who became the first Asian individual to circumnavigate the globe with Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century.
Among the exclusive exhibits are Ferdinand Magellan's will (1519), which lists the name Enrique as the young man from Malacca on the ship 'Trinidad', and the Maluku Fleet Register 'Rol de la Armada Magellan 1519', which recognises Enrique as Magellan's official interpreter.
The finale of the VM2026 opening ceremony will undoubtedly be more lively with special performances from Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza and Misha Omar, as well as various exciting events, including a 1,000-drone formation that will illuminate the Klebang sky.
For the public's convenience, three free shuttle buses will be provided with routes covering several major parking locations around the city, including Dataran Klebang, Pulau Melaka, the open area near The Seal, the road along the Eye On Malaysia and Taman Kota Shahbandar or Taman Kota Laksamana Jaya.
Over 600 policemen will be deployed to ensure all these event programmes run smoothly and safely.
The hosting of WTD 2025 and WTC 2025 is expected to be a major catalyst for Melaka's tourism economy, with the target of attracting 16.5 million tourists and projecting revenue of RM23.48 billion this year. - NST
