Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the campaign aimed to create pride and prosperity for the people while leaving behind a legacy of unity, resilience and vision for future generations. — Bernama picMELAKA, Sept 28 — Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) is not just about welcoming visitors but about giving the world a reason to remember Malaysia, says Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
He said the campaign aimed to create pride and prosperity for the people while leaving behind a legacy of unity, resilience and vision for future generations.
“Tourism is not about numbers alone. It is about how we turn our heritage into strength, how we transform tourism into the people’s economy and how we build Malaysia into a brand that the world remembers with pride,” he said when delivering his speech at the launch of VMM2026 in Klebang, here yesterday. 
Earlier, the event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, held in conjunction with World Tourism Day and the World Tourism Conference.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, while Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh was also present. 
Tiong said Malaysia’s diversity of cultures, traditions, cuisines and communities remained a key attraction, adding that the ministry was committed to advancing promotional efforts with creativity and dedication.
“As for heritage, VM2026 will showcase Malaysia as a country where history is not left behind but continues to shape the future. For example, UNESCO’s recognition of the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) reforestation project is proof that national heritage includes both culture and nature,” he said. 
Tiong stressed that tourism should also benefit grassroots communities, from rural homestays and artisans to hawkers, restaurants and young entrepreneurs.
“Malaysia, Truly Asia will always remain in our DNA, but today, the world seeks destinations that are sustainable, inclusive and innovative. For that, Malaysia must show that we are not only islands and heritage cities, but also a green, smart and welcoming nation,” he said.
Tiong also noted that tourism could not be separated from global challenges such as climate change and geopolitical uncertainties, but instead should be part of the solution by strengthening international understanding, opening new markets and supporting sustainability.
“Motac has already begun implementing measures through global sales missions, regional collaborations, digital innovation and community-based tourism pilots.
“The true success will be measured in 2026, when Malaysians from every corner of society can say this campaign brought benefit to my community and to my country,” he said. — Bernama
