Not Too Late To Ditch Muhyiddin Dissident Umno Mps Told
A group of MPs from Barisan Nasional, led by Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakub, declaring support for the PN government on Aug 6.PETALING JAYA: It is not too late for Umno MPs who chose to back Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration to return to the party’s fold, a party leader said.
Wan Agyl Hassan, information chief of Federal Territories Umno Youth, said the party was a democratic one that celebrated dissenting views.
“It does not mean that the decision made by the supreme council is inaccurate,” he told FMT, referring to the party’s recent decision to retract support for the Perikatan Nasional administration.
“But neither does it mean those who did not toe the party line were 100% at fault.
Wan Agyl Hassan.Wan Agyl said he was confident that the two sides had their reasons, although as it is in every organisation, differing views needed to be resolved internally.
Decisions made by the party, he added, went through a process and even when there were disagreements there was a process to resolve such matters.
“While it is true that they had disappointed the party, but we welcome them back. Umno is a rational party, it does not belong to anyone,” Wan Agyl said, adding he would not be surprised if Umno MPs backing the prime minister would now make a U-turn.
His comments come in the wake of reports that pro-Muhyiddin Umno MPs were caught off-guard by Muhyiddin’s overtures to the opposition in a bid to keep the Perikatan Nasional administration intact, amid speculation of an impending collapse.
Umno had previously said it would not work with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and the DAP.
However, Wan Agly admitted it would be hard for grassroots to accept this faction back.
“It is up to these MPs who have returned to the party to redouble their efforts to win back the trust of the grassroots. Every action will have consequences and I am sure these MPs are aware of the situation they will face when they return to the party.”
Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Razlan Rafii said that Umno MPs who had backed Muhyiddin should not be punished if they decide to return to the party’s fold.
“This is just my personal opinion, final say has to be decided by the leaders and the whole party,” he told FMT. - FMT
