No Sign Of Policy Violations On Anwar S Fb Page Says Meta
Following Malaysiakini’s exposé revealing a network of cybertroopers operating on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Facebook, the platform’s owner Meta said there is so far no sign of violations of its policies.
ADS“At this time, our review has not found evidence of violations of our coordinated inauthentic behaviour (CIB) policy related to the prime minister’s Facebook page,” a spokesperson told Malaysiakini in response to the news portal’s queries.
The Meta spokesperson emphasised that it has policies and operations in place across all its platforms to prevent CIB and it takes all reports seriously.
Earlier today, Malaysiakini exposed a network of at least 263 accounts working in concert to artificially boost support on Anwar’s Facebook page.

PM Anwar IbrahimIn the run-up to the publication of the report, the news portal sent a 12-page dossier detailing the findings of its investigation, the network’s tactics, and highlighted 13 high-priority accounts for further action by Meta.
This included the URLs of the accounts, and cited specific instances where they have engaged in inauthentic behaviour, such as spam-like “rapid crossposting”, the coordinated use of pre-written scripts, and deliberate attempts at deception.
For example, one account detailed in the dossier claimed to be a “university student” in one comment, and then took on the persona of a professional who has “worked with foreign investors” in another comment.
Both claims seem to contradict the account’s public profile, which states the account holder has been an engineer since 2013.
Meta guidelines
Meta’s community guidelines define CIB as “coordinated efforts to manipulate public debate for a strategic goal, in which fake accounts are central to the operation.”
It stated that Meta does not allow the use of Meta assets, such as Facebook accounts and pages, to deceive users about its identity, purpose, or origin of an audience.
It also does not allow the use of inauthentic accounts to “increase the viewership or following of network assets” or “deliver substantial quantities of fake engagement in ways designed to look authentic, in order to deceive Meta and its users about the popularity of content”.
Meta’s transparency centre claimed the company has taken action against 687 million “fake accounts” on Facebook from April to June.
It stated Meta proactively took action on 99.8 percent of the accounts, while the remaining 0.2 percent were in response to user reports.
The Prime Minister’s Office has denied any knowledge or involvement in the network, adding, “neither the government, the party leadership, nor its youth wing has issued any directive or provided any funding for such an operation”. - Mkini
