Rafizi S New Eatery Offers Seven Dishes For Rm5 Each
Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has introduced a new eatery called Kesum, offering seven types of dishes priced at only RM5 each.
It is part of his social experiment aimed at addressing the rising cost of living.
Among the dishes priced below RM5 are nasi lemak with chicken, nasi minyak lauk ayam (fragrant rice with chicken), nasi ayam berempah (spiced chicken rice), lempeng kari ayam (chicken curry pancake), mee goreng (fried noodles), and fried chicken wings.
“We are focusing on several dishes that are commonly purchased by the public.
ADS“Less menu, less cost to run, and these are meals that people eat regardless of whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, or dinner,” he told Malaysiakini.
Rafizi said this approach enables operating costs to be reduced without compromising the quality of food that Malaysians enjoy daily.
Kesum - an acronym for “kenyang, sedap dan murah” (filling, tasty, and affordable) will officially open on Nov 8 in Pandan Indah, an area within his parliamentary constituency.

Pandan MP Rafizi RamliPreviously, the former economy minister announced the simultaneous launch of two initiatives - Kesum and Fleximart, a convenience store offering grocery items priced below RM5.
Fleximart is scheduled to begin operations earlier, on Nov 1, in Section 7, Shah Alam.
Cheaper goods
According to Rafizi, Fleximart will offer daily grocery products similar to those found in other convenience stores, but at lower prices based on stock keeping unit (SKU) categories.
“Ordinary items, like those available at other convenience stores (Speedmart, KK Mart, 7-Eleven, Family Mart), are priced according to SKU and placed in price categories lower than some other stores,” he explained.
Among the products offered at Fleximart are coffee and ice cream comparable in quality to popular brands like Zus Coffee and Mixue, as well as instant noodles that can be customised with additional ingredients to suit customers’ tastes.

Ready-to-eat meals will also be sold through vending machines located inside the store.
“There are a few products that can be bought in flexible quantities - that’s why it’s called Fleximart.
“For instance, laundry detergent - customers can bring their own bottles and purchase the amount they need; sanitary pads - customers can buy them individually.
ADS“Both of these items can be purchased from the vending machines provided,” he said.
Prices based on actual costs
Rafizi explained that the pricing of all products at Kesum and Fleximart is determined through a transparent formula that takes into account various cost components.
“Our team determines the selling price based on the cost of raw materials, grocery supplies from wholesalers, indirect costs such as rent, workers’ wages, utilities, and a pre-profit-sharing cost to be paid to capital contributors.
“We then compare prices with other stores to ensure the margins result in prices among the lowest in the market,” he added.
Through the initiatives, Rafizi hoped the model can serve as an example of how innovative approaches and management efficiency can help reduce the prices of food and essential goods, without relying on government subsidies. - Mkini
