Malaysians Aged 15 39 Most Involved In Drug Abuse Says Saifuddin

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that as of June, a total of 134,916 cases had been recorded, compared to 148,015 cases during the same period last year. - NSTP/ZAID SALIMBESUT: Malaysians aged between 15 and 39 were found to be the most involved in drug abuse and addiction.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that as of June, a total of 134,916 cases had been recorded, compared to 148,015 cases during the same period last year.
Based on statistics, the percentage of drug abuse cases decreased by 8.8 per cent in the first six months of this year.
However, he added that the situation remains concerning, as many involved are still in their productive years and should ideally be part of the 17 million-strong workforce needed in the country.
"However, when they are involved in unhealthy activities such as drug abuse, they can no longer contribute as part of the workforce.
"Kelantan recorded the highest rate of drug addiction, with 758 people per 100,000 population, followed by Terengganu with 754, Perlis with 731 and Kedah with 700.
"The common factor among these four states is that they share a border with Thailand," he said after officiating the Kampung Angkat Madani Programme by the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) at Kampung Keluang, here, today.
Saifuddin said that the use of Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS), including methamphetamine, ecstasy and amphetamine, remains the primary choice among local addicts, accounting for 72.1 per cent or 97,329 cases.
However, he said the figure saw a 5.8 per cent decrease compared to 103,305 cases (69.8 per cent) recorded during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, commenting on the issue at Kampung Sungai Baru, he said that police are currently tracking several people to assist with the investigation and so far, no new arrests have been made. - NST
