(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) should openly declare that the coalition intends to contest the 15th general election (GE15) on its own, the deputy Umno Youth chief said.
Shahril Hamdan said by not forming any political alliances in GE15, BN would not need to fear those who wish “to push the button”, in a likely swipe at Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“It was also better for the coalition to openly state its intention and make clear its direction.
“In the end it is up to voters to choose and, therefore, there is nothing wrong in proclaiming one’s ambitions,” he said when addressing delegates at the Umno Youth general assembly today.

An open declaration he said would also prevent rumours of corruption and buying of MPs, stressing it was not “Umno’s way”.
The Umno information chief also called for members to avoid bickering with each other and focus instead on GE15.
“While the opposition was prone to squabble among themselves, they were able to put their differences aside just before a general election,” Shahril said, referring to the events leading to BN’s loss in the last general election (GE14).
The opposition, Shahril added, banded together on the basis of “Anything But Umno”.
“So it is not impossible that come GE15, it will be a straight fight. BN versus the rest. So don’t get too comfortable and waste our ‘ammunition’ fighting among ourselves.”
In February, Muhyiddin, had reportedly said that it would be inappropriate for him to “push the button” in the current climate when responding to a question on whether his party had planned to stay in government.
BN decided to “go solo” in the last two state elections in the peninsula, winning both the Melaka and Johor polls comfortably to gain a two-third majority in the respective state legislative assemblies. - FMT
