Ge15 Yet To Be Discussed Within Umno Says Ismail
Ismail Sabri Yaakob says the King also needs to be consulted on the timing of the next general election. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Umno has yet to discuss when the next general election (GE15) would be held, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.
At a press conference today, the party vice-president clarified that the matter has not been discussed yet in the annual general assembly that is taking place currently.
“This all needs to be discussed with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. However, we will discuss it within the party first. We will discuss it at the general assembly,” Ismail said when asked about the possible timing for GE15.
The Umno annual general assembly, which started yesterday, will continue until this Saturday.
A total of 5,571 delegates from 191 divisions nationwide are expected to attend the four-day assembly.
It is set to become the platform for the party’s leaders to echo the grassroots’ demand for GE15 to be expedited on the heels of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) massive victories in the recent Johor and Melaka state elections.
BN claimed 40 of the 56 state seats in last Saturday’s Johor elections to seal a two-thirds majority in the state assembly, with Pakatan Harapan taking 12 seats, Perikatan Nasional claiming three, and Muda one.
It was previously reported that Ismail was reluctant to call for an early GE15, preferring to wait until the current term of the government ends next year.
Following BN’s Johor polls victory last Saturday, Ismail was quoted as saying that the decision to call for a general election will only be made when the coalition is fully prepared, and not by a small group of people who are “screaming” for it to be held immediately. - FMT
