(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: Umno’s top five leaders are to discuss any decision to request a dissolution of Parliament to pave the way for the 15th general election, said Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is prime minister.
It is understood that the five will be the president and his deputy and the three vice-presidents.
Ismail said the matter will also be deliberated by the Umno Supreme Council for a final decision.
He said the views of the Umno leadership would be sought before he seeks the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament, whose term runs until July next year.
Under the Constitution, the prime minister may seek a dissolution of Parliament, but it would be the prerogative of the King to decide whether to give consent. Dissolution would trigger a fresh general election, which must be held within 60 days.
“We want Barisan Nasional to be the dominant party again. If we believe we can win, we should not wait even for a single second to call for the next general election,” he said in his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly today, Berita Harian reported.
He said Umno must first unite and avoid internal conflicts in order to win the general election.
Making a reference to a relaxation of Covid-19 movement restrictions, he said: “I have announced that those praying in mosques will be able to stand closer to each other from April 1. So, we in Umno must do the same, too.
“I promise my friends on this stage that I will work harder to strengthen the leadership’s ties with the grassroots. If we unite, Umno and BN will be able to win the general election,” he said.
BN holds 41 seats of the 112 held by the coalition supporting Ismail as prime minister. The others in the coalition are Perikatan Nasional (50 seats), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (18), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (2), PBS (1), and three independent MPs. - FMT
