Floods Hit Several Areas In Northern Peninsular Malaysia

GEORGE TOWN: Heavy rain in northern Peninsular Malaysia have caused floods in Kedah and Penang.
Southwest Penang Civil Defence Force operations officer Leftenan (PA) Noor Azizan Zakaria said among the worst-hit areas in Teluk Kumbar were Kampung Suluk, Kampung Nelayan, Kampung Paya and the cluster house residence.
"About 600 victims from several villages in Teluk Kumbar were affected by flash floods on Wednesday (Aug 18)," he said.
He said Civil Defence personnel had been deployed to the affected area since 6pm.
Continuous rain since Wednesday morning caused floods up to knee level.
Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz said a total of 300 families were affected.
"A temporary transit centre at Al-Barakah Hall in Masjid Makbul will be opened," he said.


In ALOR SETAR, flash floods forced the evacuation of villagers living near the foothills of Gunung Jerai.
More than eight villages as well as housing estates around Yan, Gurun and Merbok towns were hit by flash floods following a downpour that began at 3pm on Wednesday.
Titi Hayun and Seri Perigi hill and water recreational parks in Yan District and surrounding areas were badly affected.
Heavy rain also caused a landslide on Jalan Tanjung Jaga from Yan Besar heading to Singkir Darat.
Kedah Civil Defence Force public relations officer Norashikin Zawawi said personnel were monitoring the situation and would carry out rescue or evacuation tasks if villagers needed to be relocated.
