As Muhyiddin Seeks New Allies Zahid Warns Umno Of Bersatu S True Colours
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said party members who harbour hopes of an alliance with Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional should think twice following recent revelations on Muhyiddin Yassin.
Zahid (above, left) said Pejuang president Dr Mahathir Mohamad had accused Muhyiddin of making overtures and plotting a return to power.
"The Bersatu president reportedly wants to come back as prime minister and sought cooperation with Pejuang.
"We may have thought that (Bersatu) has an ideological position. It seems they are only acting in self-interest," wrote Zahid on his Facebook page.
Moreover, Zahid said Muhyiddin, of late, had also approached PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal.
"For those in Umno who still want to cooperate, believe in or are still defending Bersatu, you should evaluate the actions and habits of the PN and Bersatu leader, for he is very desperate to come back as prime minister.
"Do we want to cooperate with such a party?" asked Zahid. "Umno is not perfect, but we are not desperate. We do not abandon our principles for power."
Two days ago, Muhyiddin claimed that he had taken the initiative to approach other party leaders on a possible pact for the next general election.
This, claimed Muhyiddin, was sparked by conversations with several political leaders on the fact that the majority who voted during the Johor state election did not vote for BN, which eventually won the election with a two-thirds majority.
Muhyiddin became prime minister on March 1, 2020, after Bersatu pulled out of the Pakatan Harapan administration. He resigned on Aug 16, 2021, after several Umno MPs, including Zahid, withdrew their support.
Following this, Muhyiddin and Bersatu threw their support behind Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who became prime minister on Aug 21, 2021.
During the Malacca election in 2021 and the recently concluded Johor election, the PN coalition which Muhyiddin leads drew 24.31 percent and 24.04 percent of the votes cast, respectively. - Mkini
