Muhyiddin Trying To Save His Projects Says Umno S Nazri
Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was accused by Umno veteran Nazri Aziz today of seeking to further his personal interests.KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was accused today of trying to further his personal interests by seeking a return to power.
Umno veteran Nazri Aziz said in a media interview that Muhyiddin was “desperate to save his projects” from possible cancellation by the government.
Nazri said it was acceptable if Muhyiddin and other opposition parties united to defeat Umno and Barisan Nasional at the coming general election because they felt they could do better for the country.
“But if they want to bring down Umno, which is a sacred party, only for personal interests, because they want to save projects like Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), I think it will fail,” he said in an interview with Astro Awani.
Nazri did not mention which projects were of interest to Muhyiddin.
However, in September last year, Klang MP Charles Santiago had called for an investigation of Muhyiddin’s links to YTL Communications Sdn Bhd and the 1BestariNet project to connect schools for internet learning.
The DNB project to roll out 5G mobile phone technology has come under criticism, with Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil calling for an investigation into DNB’s links with Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications company.
Government-owned DNB, the sole provider of network infrastructure, has awarded a 10-year contract to Ericcson to supply equipment and services.
Last week, Muhyiddin, who was prime minister from March 2020 to August 2021, was said to have sought the support of opposition leaders recently to regain the prime ministership.
However, Muhyiddin said yesterday that the meetings were to forge a new opposition coalition to deny the Umno-led Barisan Nasional’s return to power.
Nazri, a former Umno Supreme Council member, questioned Muhyiddin’s motives, saying that Muhyiddin had repeatedly stated during the recent state elections in Melaka and Johor that he did not intend to be prime minister again.
He said Muhyiddin was being thick-skinned and lacking in dignity by seeking support from people whom he had betrayed in politics. - FMT
