UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh disagreed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s view that guidelines for Muslims visiting non-Muslim places of worship are unnecessary.
He argued that not all Muslims fully understand the religious boundaries, and such guidelines serve as a helpful reference, similar to road regulations that even licenced drivers sometimes forget.
Not everyone has the same knowledge or understanding as we do. Just like road regulations, many licenced drivers still don’t fully understand the existing laws, and some even drive under the influence of alcohol,” he added.
Akmal emphasised that the guidelines are meant as a reminder rather than a restriction. He also warned non-Muslims not to interfere in the matter, stating that the guidelines apply only to Muslims and should not concern others. Especially when it comes to guidelines for Muslims, which apply only to Muslims.
“Non-Muslims don’t need to be involved or interfere. Simple as that,” he added.
Meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden criticised the government for its inconsistent stance on guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim religious events.
“PAS Youth believes that Islam, as the religion of the federation, must be fully respected in all government policies and actions.
“We urge that this issue be given serious attention to ensure the sovereignty of Islam is preserved while maintaining national harmony,” he said in a statement last night (Feb 7).
He questioned the government’s commitment to upholding the National Fatwa Council’s decisions and Islam’s position as the religion of the federation. He urged the government to clarify its stance, adopt the guidelines as national policy, and grant Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia and state religious councils full autonomy to implement fatwas without political interference.
He also called for structured dialogue between the government, religious authorities and non governmental organisations to ensure religious sensitivities are respected. He warned that disregarding the fatwa council’s guidance could create confusion among Muslims and threaten religious harmony in Malaysia.
“Ignoring or failing to respect its views not only creates confusion among Muslims but also has the potential to undermine religious sensitivities, which have long been a cornerstone of harmony in Malaysia’s multiracial society,” he said. — Focus Malaysia
