Yusoff Rawther Files Civil Suit Against Anwar After Agc Won T File Charges
Former research student Muhammed Yusoff Rawther has filed a civil suit in the Kuala Lumpur High Court against PKR president Anwar Ibrahim over alleged sexual misconduct in an incident dating back to October 2018.
This comes after the Attorney-General’s Chambers announced on Jan 14, 2020 that it would not be charging Anwar over the allegations due to a lack of evidence.
The new filing at the KL High Court was confirmed to Malaysiakini by Yusoff's lawyer Mahajoth Singh.
In his statement of claim, Yusoff is seeking a declaration that the defendant (Anwar) had perpetrated sexual assault and/or trespass against him.
He is also seeking RM180 per therapy session, exemplary damages, court costs, five percent per annum interest on any possible judgment sum and other miscellaneous costs or damages.
Last year, Solicitor-General Engku Nor Faizah Engku Atek said there were “contradictions of material facts” that could not support prosecution under the Penal Code.
“We also found there is insufficient evidence to prosecute on the reports lodged based on the evidence available in the investigation papers.
“In the circumstances, we agree with the recommendation of the police that the case be closed,” she said, adding that the probe may only be reopened should new evidence become available.
In November 2020, Yusoff had authored a statutory declaration to claim that he was a victim of an attempted sexual assault perpetrated by Anwar at the latter’s home in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 2, 2018.
Yusoff released details of the statutory declaration in December last year. Anwar has denied any wrongdoing. - Mkini
