PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Nazri Aziz has shot back at MCA and MIC who accused him of undermining the coalition’s multiracial make-up, saying the two parties should “go ahead and leave”
“Go ahead, walk the talk. Don’t just talk,” Nazri told FMT when asked to respond to a joint statement by Wee Ka Siong and SA Vigneswaran, the presidents of MCA and MIC, who said they were now exploring “a new alliance”
Nazri said Umno too was looking to form a new alliance with PAS
“We want a permanent alliance with PAS to face GE15,” he added
Wee and Vigneswaran had expressed disappointment with the silence of Umno leaders over what they said were “racial remarks” by Nazri
They also called for an urgent meeting of BN leaders to decide on the coalition’s future, saying there was no longer a commitment from leaders to uphold multiracialism
They referred to Nazri’s remarks in which he questioned the appointment of non-Muslim appointees to top posts, saying they were not able to be sworn in using the Quran
The remarks drew flak from politicians from both sides of the divide, and the former tourism minister later explained that he was merely reflecting the sentiments on the ground
Nazri today reminded MCA and MIC that BN had already seen the exit of 10 component parties since losing the general election last year
“The 10 didn’t talk much, they just left. MCA and MIC just blow hot air,” he added
Nazri said any decision to call for a meeting of top leaders was up to the BN chairman
He also dismissed the MCA and MIC chiefs for saying that his appointment as the BN secretary-general was “illegal”
“It is not the MCA or MIC which has the power to appoint the BN secretary-general, but the BN chairman.”Nazri said he had already denied making racial remarks as charged by Wee and Vigneswaran
“Wee or Vigneswaran are either blind or deaf because I have already denied, either that or they are stupid.”Nazri also lashed out at the two parties, saying both no longer enjoyed support from their own communities
“They don’t represent their community, it is presumptuous for them to say that
“The fact is, only DAP and PKR can speak like that because it is clear in GE14 that the Chinese voice is represented by DAP and the Indian voice is represented by PKR and DAP
“MCA and MIC are left with one seat each and both are in substantial Malay-majority seats, so they do not represent the Chinese and Indians.”Meanwhile, acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan said he would only comment after meeting leaders from MCA and MIC
“We will have a BN meeting first, and we will discuss,” he told FMT. - FMT
