Urban Renewal Act Johari Ghani Calls On Public To Give Feedback At Convention

Urban Renewal Convention will be held at WTCKL on Oct 3 - NSTP FILE PICKUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has urged the public to attend the Urban Renewal Convention on Oct 3 to ensure that the Urban Renewal Act (URA) reflects the voices and concerns of communities on the ground.
In a Facebook post, he said the convention would serve as a crucial platform to hear feedback from underserved communities, who are most affected by urban redevelopment.
It will feature community leaders, lawyers, experts and speakers from across Malaysia, who will share their views and concerns about the URA.
Johari, who chairs Umno's special task force tasked with refining the Urban Renewal Bill, said:
"Our hope is that the URA will take into account and reflect the views of the community on the ground, especially since redevelopment largely affects residential areas where the majority of residents are from low-income groups.
"Naturally, they are concerned about how the demographics of these areas will be managed, among other related issues."
He said some people have questioned the need for the URA, given the existence of the Strata Title Act and the Land Acquisition Act.
"That is why we want to listen to their views during the upcoming convention.
"I told them: you speak up and justify your points - I am only coordinating.
"My decision alone is not enough, and no one person can decide this.
"We must see what the community thinks," he said in a video attached to the post.
The convention will kick off at 3pm at WTCKL. - NST
