The post also showcased Earth's hydrosphere in three other locations, namely, sandbanks in the Bahamas, the biologically rich waters of the Gulf of California, and Pyramid Lake in Nevada, USA.
The images are part of the ISS's ongoing effort to highlight the planet's diverse landscapes from orbit.
Sungai Kelantan stood out, snaking through one of Malaysia's most densely populated floodplains before emptying into the South China Sea.
"On its eastern bank, where the river meets the sea, lies Kota Baru, a city founded in the late 19th century and home to approximately 570,000 people," the post read.
Taken on Oct 2 from 260 miles above Earth, the images reveal natural processes shaping the landscape, including water flow patterns, sediment deposition and terrain changes.
The post has garnered over 1,500 likes and hundreds of shares, with Malaysians excited to see their home from a whole new perspective.
"Proud moment. Kelantan is mentioned too!" several netizens commented.
Others poked fun at the river's brown hue.
"Teh tarik seen from space. We all know which one is Sungai Kelantan," one quipped.
Another user suggested the murky colour could be due to heavy rainfall during the current monsoon season. - NST
