How Can We Get Rid Of Termites From Our Home
You can’t really get rid of termites in your garden. Outdoors is where they live.
You CAN keep them from getting into your house. There is a chemical treatment you can have inserted into holes around border of your house. If termites cross that line, they die, and the ones that don’t die immediately bring the poison back into their nest. So though you have them in the yard, they won’t get into the house. That’s what matters.
They go deep into the ground, right near the house foundation, so pets should’t get to them.
Yes, there are “termite traps,” which some companies offer, but I have been told they are counterproductive. They work by giving off a chemical scent that draws termites to them, which they kill. You open up the trap, you dead termites. Yay! the problem is, the chemicals ATTRACT termites to your yard. So while you may be killing a whole load of them, you’ve invited even more to check out the area.
Termites can destroy a house, as I’m sure you know. For me, they’ are on the list of things you just don’t screw around with DIY. The price of failure is just too high. Hire a professional. In my experience they vary greatly in price, so get multiple quotes. My last preventative treatment cost me a few hundred dollars, a reasonable cost to do something that could save your house.
I have a swarm appear in my backyard every year, which means there is a nest somewhere very close, so I’m pretty damn paranoid about them getting into the house.
If you can see the concrete foundation of your house, or have a crawl space under the house, check now and then for termite tunnels. They live in the earth and build little mud channels in which they travel up into the house. Very visible, if you can see that part of the house. (I can’t, due to placement of siding, hence the paranoia)
Several things can be done to help prevent termite infestations. Some are logical and can be done by the homeowner. Some of them are:
1. Eliminate wood in contact with the ground.
2. Do not let moisture accumulate near the foundation.
3. Reduce moisture and humidity in crawl spaces
4. Never store firewood or wood debris against foundations or inside crawlspaces.
5. Use mulch sparingly, especially if you already have termites or other conducive conditions.
6. Consider having the home treated by a professional pest control firm.
Some chemicals that can be used are;
- (Fipronyl) is widely used for termite control and is the most popular termiticide in the USA. Termidor is the only Termiticide to show 100% effectiveness against termites and also provides termite colony elimination. Also, Bifenthrin—This active ingredient is a pyrethroid insecticide, meaning it's derived from naturally occurring chemicals in Chrysanthemum flowers. Bifenthrin prevents termites' nerves from functioning, ultimately killing them.
Other anti-termite chemicals such as by Ortho are on the market and can be used.
