Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob shows that his BN administration practices double standards when he defended Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein who recently violated Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP), said Selangor PKR Youth chief.
Chua Wei Kiat, who is also a Selangor state assembly member, stressed that Hishammuddin should not have been let go with a mere fine, but instead must receive punishment more severe than ordinary members of the public as the minister was in charge of enforcing the pandemic SOPs.
"This is not an issue of whether violating SOP is a crime or not. In a situation where the Covid-19 infection is spiking, government leaders should lead the rakyat by example.
"It was also not the first time a government leader was found violating SOP. If a mere fine continues to be the way to punish the VIPs, then it would not deter them from doing it again even for a thousand times because they can afford the compound. But when ordinary citizen violates the SOP, they get jail time because they can't afford to pay.
"A leader who violates Covid-19 SOP must be punished with heavier punishment than what the ordinary people get. This is especially when it involves a leader who was put in charge of enforcing the said SOP," Chua said in a statement.

On Sunday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced that he had ordered his ministry to issue fines to Hishammuddin, incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad and MIC president S Vigneswaran.
This was after the trio was depicted in a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd at a Johor MIC event.

However, Ismail Sabri had defended the minister, saying that Hishammuddin had already been issued with a fine and the violation was not a crime.
Under current rules, Malaysians have to practice physical distancing of one metre.
Under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act 1998, those flouting rules imposed by the Health Ministry to prevent the spread of infectious diseases can be fined RM1,000.
