Socks Row Akmal Willing To Lose Position For Defending Islam
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said he is willing to lose his position in return for defending Islam on the issue of the sale of Allah socks.
Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Akmal said he also does not mind the reprimand from fellow leaders from components in the coalition government, as his acts are in line with Umno’s struggle to uphold Malay rights and the Islamic religion.
“I would be lying if I said (my act) does not impact (the coalition government). I don’t mind DAP or ministers from any other party reprimanding me. I will still defend my religion.
“I don’t care and the rakyat can judge me. If Nga Kor Ming says that my act can cost Umno support, I tell him that this is how Umno acts when someone makes fun of Islam.
“I’m willing to lose my position, as long as I have done my part to defend my religion. This position is only secondary,” he was quoted telling the Malay daily.
Nga, who is also housing and local government minister, recently urged Akmal to cease inciting racial and religious sentiments by calling for the boycott of convenience store chain KK Mart over the sale of socks with the word Allah at one of its outlets.
Akmal’s reaction is harmful and may end up backfiring on Umno, the DAP parliamentary leader had warned.
Besides Nga, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing have also reprimanded Akmal.
Despite the rebuke, Akmal remains unfazed in his push for a boycott against KK Mart.
Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he has asked Akmal to handle the controversial issue courteously.
