Mydin Boss Slams Umno Youth Chief For Exploiting Socks Issue
Mydin hypermarket boss Ameer Ali Mydin has taken Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to task for "exploiting" the issue concerning the socks bearing the word Allah.
"Why is he still kicking up a fuss?
"Political parties should distance themselves from 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues and should not pour oil on the flames," Ameer told Free Malaysia Today.
According to Ameer, Akmal's call for the boycotting of the KK Mart convenience store chain, where the controversial socks were found, would affect investor confidence and the livelihood of workers - most of whom are Malay Muslims.
"Both KK Mart and the vendor have apologised. What else do you expect them to do?" Ameer (above), who is also the president of the Bumiputera Retailers Association, said.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal SalehWhile acknowledging the issue was a serious matter, Ameer said there was no need for it to be escalated, especially for political mileage.
The controversy began when photographs of socks bearing the word Allah being sold at a KK Mart outlet in Bandar Sunway went viral online last week.
The KK Mart Management has since apologised, while the supplier Xi Jian Chang Sdn Bhd has also done the same.
The Batu Pahat Municipal Council had given the supplier 60 days to provide a written statement to explain the fiasco, failing which Xi Jian Chang could face a shutdown.
Despite the apology and KK Mart putting up digital apology notices at its outlets, Akmal had remained steadfast in his boycott call, demanding KK Mart put on physical banners instead.
Last night, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party fully supported Akmal's stance. - Mkini
