Second Autopsy Report Affirmed Utm Cadet Died From Severe Neck Injury
The forensic findings from the second post-mortem conducted on deceased Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsuddin confirmed a traumatic neck injury as his cause of death, said his family lawyer, Naran Singh.
Naran, who met reporters outside the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Kuala Lumpur Hospital today, said that the reports showed the injury was sustained when Syamsul (above) was still alive.
He said the second post-mortem examination was conducted in conjunction with the photographs and histopathological materials from the first post-mortem examination.
Following these findings, he urged the attorney-general (AG) to take subsequent steps to identify who had caused these injuries to Syamsul and bring them to court to face the music.
“(The AG should) take immediate action. It’s important to know who caused this injury and if there are people involved, drag them to court as soon as possible.
“To the Defence Minister Khaled Nordin, who gave a press statement previously in saying that there was no obvious injury from the (first) post mortem, the information conveyed to him was not accurate, and I hope he will prepare a new team to investigate this.
“(And) I also hope the police will continue their investigation on this case,” he said.
He added that he believed authorities had conducted their investigation and that their papers were referred to the AG twice, as they awaited the second post-mortem report, which Naran said has now been completed and spans over 25 pages.

Lawyer Naran Singh“It is a very accurate, very detailed autopsy report (and) we hope that immediate action will be taken.”
Foul play suspected
Syamsul, 22, had passed away during a Reserve Officers Training Unit (Rotu) exercise in Ulu Tiram, Johor. His mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, said that she was informed of her son’s death on July 28.
On Aug 1, Ummu told a press conference that she had suspected foul play in her son’s death after seeing bruises and bloodied eyes on Shamsul’s body before he was buried.
She then filed an application at the Shah Alam High Court on Aug 14, requesting the exhumation of Syamsul’s body, a second post-mortem, and an inquest into his death, which was allowed by judge Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet on Aug 26, which led to Syamsul’s body being exhumed three days later.
The second post-mortem was conducted right away.
The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department’s Classified Investigations Unit confirmed on Aug 26 that they are taking over the investigation into Syamsul’s death.
On Sept 18, Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said any decision on whether an inquest will be held into Syamsul’s death will be made after receiving a full report from the police, from the police, including the hospital’s report on the second post-mortem, which is expected to be completed within three months.
On Oct 30, Ummu filed another legal action against the government, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad and four others in an attempt to get a copy of the first post-mortem report.

Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun with a picture of her son, Syamsul Haris ShamsuddinNaran confirmed to Malaysiakini today that the Shah Alam High Court has fixed Dec 5 for the deputy public prosecutor to inform the court of their instruction from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) regarding the first post-mortem report.
‘My instinct was right all along’
Ummu, who was present with Naran today, reiterated her plea to the government to take appropriate action in investigating Syamsul’s death.
“My instinct has been right all along.. what I’ve seen, what I’ve felt. My gut feeling was proven right. This second post-mortem showed many injuries on his neck, which I saw and felt suspicious of (when I saw his body), more so on the right side of his neck.
“When I went to the hospital to see his body, I was heavily guarded and discouraged from going over to the right side of his body.
“I am sad (after reading these findings). So terribly sad.. but Alhamdulillah… It has been proven that whatever I said the other day was true. I beg the AGC. We have laws. Please, investigate my son’s case transparently.” - Mkini
