Rm5 82bil In Socso Benefits Paid Out Last Year Says Sim

PETALING JAYA: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) paid out RM5.82 billion in benefits to 871,949 recipients last year, says human resources minister Steven Sim.
This was higher than the RM5.48 billion paid out to 920,368 recipients in 2023 and RM4.92 billion to 866,666 recipients in 2022.
“Pensions made up the highest amount paid in 2024 at RM2.41 billion, followed by invalidity pensions at RM1.19 billion and permanent disability benefits at over RM627 million.
“The enforcement of the new salary ceiling for contributions from RM5,000 to RM6,000 saw greater and wider benefit payments,” Bernama quoted him as saying at a ministry-Socso Iftar event today.
Sim also said the number of accident cases classified as non-occupational disasters recorded in January this year has been quite concerning, with a total of 177 cases where the affected workers received no protection.
He said the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 only provides coverage for workers if the accident is classified as an occupational disaster or a service-related illness.
“Last year’s data showed that a total of 80,166 accident cases were reported to Socso, an average of 6,680 cases per month or 219 cases per day.
“We must remember that those 177 cases (this year) involve workers who are also husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and children out there who do not receive protection because their cases are not classified as occupational disasters.
“That is why I want to implement the non-occupational accident scheme to ensure 24-hour protection,” he said. - FMT
