Punish Mrsm Wardens Admin Over Bullying Cases Too Says Don

Police have taken the statements of seven students in relation to a bullying case at an MRSM in Penang last year.
PETALING JAYA: An academic has called for action against the wardens and administrators of Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSMs) where cases of bullying occur.
While comending Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki for his stand against bullying, UCSI University’s Tajuddin Rasdi said the wardens and administrators of these junior colleges must be held accountable if they are negligent in their duties.
He said the tragic cases involving late navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain and Lahad Datu vocational college student Nazmie Aizzat Narul Azwan were still fresh in the minds of Malaysians, particularly those who are parents.
“I have advised all parents not to send their children to government boarding schools and institutions for fear of severe bullying.
“Apart from expelling the students, I think stern action should also be taken on the wardens and administrators who are negligent with the safety of our children,” he told FMT.
Tajuddin, a professor of Islamic architecture, also called for MRSMs and other Mara education institutions to review their intake policies in order to root out children with a history of disciplinary issues.
He added that Mara should halt any practice of enrolling students “through favours and social connections”, saying the priority must be the safety of the children enrolled in these boarding schools.
Police are investigating a bullying case at an MRSM in Seberang Perai Selatan, Penang, which took place last year. The statements of seven students were recorded after a video of the incident went viral.
Seven Form Three students are believed to have been involved, including the victim and the person who recorded the video.
Asyraf later said that more complaints of bullying at MRSMs were coming in, and urged the public to continue reporting such cases, whether to him or through social media.
The Mara chairman added that any student involved in bullying would be expelled, saying such acts could not be tolerated. - FMT
