Amid Backlash Kulai School Says Student Expelled Over Doctored Photos
Foon Yew High School in Kulai, Johor, has come under fire for its handling of an incident involving doctored indecent images of students and alumni.
The school’s board of directors clarified that one of the students involved in the incident has been expelled, and was not merely given two minor reprimands as some had claimed online.
However, it admitted that the school failed to respond swiftly to the matter, which sparked public concern.
“We have since instructed the school to take this as a serious lesson,” it said in a statement today.
The board added that the parents of the student had been informed of his expulsion.
The board also pledged full support for the victims and their families, including counselling, which will be provided by the school counsellors and professional psychologists.
“We will also ensure strict confidentiality regarding the victims’ identities and will provide legal assistance where needed,” the board said.
Protect teachers too
In light of online allegations made against a disciplinary teacher, the board said an internal investigation has found the claims to be baseless and distorted.
“We are duty-bound to protect the safety and well-being of our students, while also upholding the dignity of our teachers.
“We reserve the right to take legal action against anyone who defames or bullies the teachers and students of our school,” the board said.
ADSThe board reaffirmed that it is fully cooperating with the police in their ongoing investigation, which includes efforts to track down the anonymous online account “Li Xiaobai”, accused of harassing alumni and distributing doctored images.
Looking ahead, the board said it will work closely with the school administrators to improve internal procedures for handling sensitive incidents.
It also said efforts are underway to enhance campus awareness of digital safety, legal education, sex education, and anti-violence initiatives.
The board acknowledged the school’s long history and challenges as a Chinese independent high school and expressed its openness to constructive feedback.
Earlier reports revealed that a female student had alleged on social media that two male schoolmates used photo-editing technology to create indecent images of her, which were then shared in chat groups and on social media for profit.
Some anonymous victims claimed on social media that the school had only issued two minor reprimands to one of the perpetrators and instructed him to delete the posts.
Police have since arrested a 16-year-old boy believed to be behind the images. He has been remanded for four days to assist investigations. A mobile phone, allegedly used to generate the doctored photos, was also confiscated. - Mkini
