Prasarana Pledges Support For Lrt Crash Probes

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has pledged its full cooperation to the Transport Ministry's special committee formed to investigate the Light Rail Transit (LRT) collision involving 213 passengers, a driver and an operator last night.
In a statement, the company said it will extend similar cooperation to police investigations under Section 201 of the Land Transport Act 2010.
Prasarana chairperson Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who was at the scene last night, also announced that each passenger involved in the collision will be compensated with RM1,000.
"This is on top of financial assistance to cover medical costs, further treatments and others.
"As well as the cost of living assistance for those who suffer a loss of income due to this incident," he said.
Tajuddin expressed regret over the first such incident in the LRT's 23 years of operations.
"On behalf of Prasarana's board members and staff, we apologise to all Malaysians and our passengers for this unwanted incident.
"We were deeply saddened by the incident that erased LRT Kelana Jaya's clean record over the last 23 years," added the Pasir Salak MP.


Meanwhile, Prasarana reiterated that the LRT Kelana Jaya line has resumed operations on a single track at 6am today and will be supported by shuttle bus services at peak hours.
It noted that a reduced frequency for the LRTs to 10-30 minutes, coupled with reduced capacity under the new movement control order (MCO 3.0) regulations, would lead to a longer than average waiting period.
The Fire and Rescue Department said the underground tunnel collision at 9.15pm yesterday involved train number 240 and 181 that were plying the Kelana Jaya line.
It confirmed that the Gombak-bound train 181 from KLCC with 213 passengers, moving at 40km/hour, collided with the empty train 240 - with one driver and operator - moving at 20km/hour from the opposite direction on the same track.
Aftermath photos from the scene showed bleeding passengers and bloodstained LRT cabins, believed to be from the impact of the crash.
The preliminary report stated that 166 people sustained light injuries while 47 others were more seriously hurt. - Mkini
