Police Reports Lodged Against Um Group Ngo Demands Sedition Probe
The Federation of Peninsular Malay Students says more reports will be filed against Umany this week. The Penang chapter of the Federation of Peninsular Malay Students said it filed six police reports against Umany yesterday.PETALING JAYA: The Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) has lodged numerous police reports nationwide against a Universiti Malaya student body over its remarks about the matriculation programme and called for it to be probed for sedition among others
Penang GPMS alone has lodged six police reports, the state chapter’s vice-chairman Danial Alimin revealed.
He added that police reports were also lodged in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Pahang and Perak by the respective state chapters.
“Other states are expected to follow suit in the coming days,” he told FMT.
Separately, when contacted, Negeri Sembilan GPMS vice-chairman Hakim Zain said they will lodge a police report today.
The Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) sparked controversy with a statement last week in which it suggested that the matriculation system be replaced by the STPM (sixth form examination) as the sole standard for admission into public universities.
Umany president Tang Yi Ze had said that the STPM syllabus was better since it was more challenging and was internationally recognised.
On Saturday, however, Umany clarified that it had not intended to call for the abolition of the matriculation programme but had sought a merger of the programme with the STPM higher school certificate as the university entrance qualification.
It also admitted that its use of the word “abolish” in a statement on Friday had led to confusion and rubbed certain quarters the wrong way.
Umany subsequently apologised for the confusion caused.
However, GPMS wants Umany to be probed for public mischief and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace apart from sedition. - FMT
