Police Release Two Students Arrested In Ulu Tiram Police Station Attack

Two higher learning institution students who were arrested to assist in the investigation into the Ulu Tiram police station attack on May 17 have been released.
Johor police chief M Kumar said a 22-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were released yesterday on instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
They were being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries punishments for murder.
“However, investigations into five of their family members are still ongoing as their remand order will end on May 24,” Kumar (above) said in a statement on Facebook.
The duo, one studying at a private institution while the other at a training institution, were present at the Ulu Tiram police station right before the pre-dawn attack last Friday when a man killed two police officers and injured another. The attacker was also shot dead.
The police personnel killed in the incident were Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain initially said the 21-year-old assailant was linked to the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) due to his father’s involvement with the terrorist group, but he later confirmed that the man shot dead at the scene was not a JI member.
Last night, a son of JI founder Abu Bakar Bashir claimed that the senior cleric no longer has ties with Madrasah Luqmanul Hakim in Ulu Tiram ever since his return to Indonesia 25 years ago.
When contacted by Malaysiakini, Abdul Rahim Bashir said his father also has no communication with the assailant’s family members.
Rahim, whose name has been listed on a United Nations Security watchlist since 2011 for suspected ties to Al-Qaeda, further claimed that his father was never involved in founding the sekolah pondok or its management. - Mkini
