the two might be involved in the attack as distractions for police

My Comments :
Malaysia's No 1 expert on the Madrasah Luqmanul Hakiem and the Jemaah Islamiyah is none other than Deputy Inspector-General of Police Dato' Sri Ayob Khan bin Mydin Pitchay (picture).
 
The Madrasah Luqmanul Hakiem was established by Indonesian terrorist mentor Abu Bakar Bashir of the Jemaah Islamiyah and another Indonesian called Abdullah Sungkar. Abdullah Sungkar was closely identified with Al Qaeda.

The madrasah in Ulu Tiram was a rerun of the Pondok Ngruki which both Sungkar and Basyir had started in Indonesia in the 1980s. 
Some say Abdullah Sungkar was the founder of the Jemaah Islamiyah. Abdullah Sungkar died in 1999.

Now here is the really strange part of this story:

Abu Bakar Bashir was imprisoned in Indonesia from 1978 to 1982.  Soon after his release, Bashir was convicted again; he was also linked to the bomb attack on the Buddhist temple in Borobudur in 1985 but fled to Malaysia. During his 13 years in exile in Malaysia (1985 to 1998??) Abu Bakar Bashir undertook religious teachings. The United States government alleged that during this period in Malaysia he became involved with Jemaah Islamiyah, a militant Islamist group. Bashir remained in exile until after Indonesian President Suharto's fall in 1998.

My question is WHY WAS ABU BAKAR BASYIR THE TERRORIST MENTOR FROM INDONESIA GIVEN A RED IC, PERMANENT RESIDENCE, TO STAY IN MALAYSIA FOR 13 YEARS (1985 to 1998??) AND RUN AN OBVIOUSLY MILITANT MADRASAH IN ULU TIRAM?
And now the Police are saying that there are still Jemaah Islamiyah members not just in Ulu Tiram but "throughout Johor" ??

To obtain weapons? For what purpose?

To be honest, most Non-Malays already knew what was going on in Madrassah Lukmannul Hakiem.In fact we all knew about Abu Bakar and Abdullah Sungkar and the 11 lecturers at that MadrassahWe all know Skudai/Taman U, is the home of Hizbut Tahrir.When the JI detainee escaped from Singapore swimming across the straits, he headed straight to Skudai.We Non-Muslims know what is exactly going on.Johor was safer when Dato Ayob Khan was here (as CPO Johor).It looks like the Jemaah Islamiyah crows are still flying around in Johor. 
They are still coming home to roost.
