Pn Urges Macc To Probe Shamsul Iskandar
Chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan says failure to do so could undo the government's initiatives and pledges to combat corruption.
PKR’s Shamsul Iskandar Akin announced his resignation as the prime minister’s senior political secretary yesterday.PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe PKR’s Shamsul Iskandar Akin following allegations raised against the former senior political secretary to the prime minister
PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan cited Shamsul’s letter of support for contractors involved in a hospital project and claims that the Melaka PKR chief received over RM600,000 from controversial businessman Albert Tei, who is at the centre of the Sabah mining scandal.
“PN MPs urge MACC to immediately launch an investigation to look into the claims, because this involves a former senior officer to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“Failure to do so will lead to massive implications that could potentially undo the government’s initiatives and pledges to combat corruption, abuse of power and money politics,” he said in a statement.
The PAS secretary-general also urged all parties involved in both issues to cooperate with the graft-busters, saying any wrongdoing should be met with impartial legal action.
“PN MPs remain committed to the principles of transparency, accountability, integrity and the rule of law,” said Takiyuddin, the Kota Bharu MP.
Shamsul announced his resignation as Anwar’s senior political secretary yesterday, citing attempts to attack him through controversies which he said could have a negative impact on the government’s image.
The former Hang Tuah Jaya MP had drawn backlash for penning a letter of support for a hospital project, which also earned him a reprimand by Anwar as government regulations do not permit the issuance of such letters.
Following Shamsul’s announcement of his resignation, Malaysiakini quoted Tei as claiming he had spent RM629,000 on Shamsul, including on renovations for properties linked to the PKR man, as well as premium cigars and custom suits.
Tei was charged in June with two counts of giving bribes to two assemblymen involving the Sabah mining scandal.
Former Tanjung Batu assemblyman Andi Suryady Bandy and former Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving RM150,000 and RM200,000 in bribes, respectively. - FMT
