Pkr Youth Backs Call To Police To Drop Questioning Of 13 Rally Participants
More than 200 protesters, mostly university students, turned up at the anti-corruption rally outside the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 25.
PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth has supported the call to the police to reconsider summoning 13 university students involved in the anti-corruption rally on Jan 25 to give their statements.
Its information director, Haziq Azfar, said the move to summon the students was “unjustified”.
“The decision to summon participants of the peaceful assembly for questioning should be reconsidered and withdrawn as it is not in line with the government’s policies and approach,” Haziq said in a statement today.
He pointed out that the prime minister had assured the public before the gathering that it could proceed without obstruction from the government.
Earlier, DAP central committee member Lee Chin Chen also asked the police to cancel their plans to question the 13 students and to stop harassing those who take part in peaceful gatherings.
Expressing his disappointment over the move, Lee described it as a violation of the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
Yesterday, Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendi Sulaiman confirmed summoning the 13 students, saying they were being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Rally organiser mobilisation coordinator Tobey Qi-Sean was reported as saying he received a call from the police yesterday afternoon.
He said police had given him the names of the 13 students who were required to provide statements at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Sunday at 1pm.
Qi-Sean said two of the students are from Universiti Malaysia Sabah and will provide their statements at the Kepayan police headquarters in Kota Kinabalu on Feb 7.
According to him, four of the 13 students were participants at the gathering while the others were part of the organising committee. All four participants also gave speeches during the event.
