Pkr Approves Motion To Appoint Wan Azizah As Advisory Council Chair
PKR AGM | The PKR congress has unanimously approved a motion to appoint outgoing party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the PKR advisory council chairperson
The motion was put forth by Fahmi Fadzil on behalf of the party central leadership committee at the 13th PKR National Congress today.
"(We) propose for the central leadership committee to appoint Wan Azizah as the chairperson of the PKR advisory council so we can continue to benefit from her wisdom and experience, and as a sign of thank you and appreciation to her," Fahmi said, in reading out the motion.
The motion was then put forth to the floor, where it was almost immediately approved unanimously and without debate.
The motion also thanked Wan Azizah for her sacrifice and leadership, expressed the commitment from all PKR members to continue the fight in her footsteps and urged her to continue playing an active role in the party
Earlier, a PKR delegate suggested for Wan Azizah to replace Anwar Ibrahim as the de facto leader of the party
"I would like to propose for this congress to uplift Wan Azizah as de facto leader to replace Anwar now that he is president," said Sabah PKR delegate Mohd Amin Abdul Mem during his speech at the 13th PKR national congress in Shah Alam today
Anwar will be taking over as PKR president after he won the position uncontested in the party elections. Wan Azizah did not contest any positions this term
Previously, incumbent PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin had said that the de facto leader position should be abolished after Anwar becomes the president
"This post of ketua umum (de facto leader) was the creation of our party congress for Anwar
"Let's abolish the ketua umum position so he can come back to lead the party as the president," Shamsul had said in an interview with Malaysiakini in June
After his first release from prison, Anwar was endorsed by PKR in the 2007 AGM as its de facto leader
At the time, he was slapped with a five-year ban from active politics due to his conviction for corruption
Anwar has since received a full royal pardon and returned to politics as the Port Dickson MP. - Mkini
