Pas Pushes For Prime Minister Post If It Wins More Seats Than Bersatu In Ge16

PAS is making its voice heard more clearly within PN, with leaders calling for the party to take the prime minister’s post if it wins more parliamentary seats than its partners in the next general election.
Kelantan PAS secretary Datuk Wan Roslan Wan Hamat stressed that while no candidate has been named, it is natural for PAS to put forward its choice should it emerge stronger than Bersatu in GE16.
“For me, it’s better that we focus on the work to win the 16th General Election first. Once we win, then we can discuss. If PAS wins many seats, of course the Prime Minister will come from us (PAS),” he said at a press conference yesterday.
However, he preached caution in naming who will be the PM for PAS. “For me, it’s better after GE16. If we name it early, what if we lose?” he said.
The tussle in PN over future leadership began when Bersatu reaffirmed full support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, nominating him as the 11th Prime Minister.
PAS Youth, meanwhile, proposed the party’s deputy president, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, as the main prime minister candidate for PN should the coalition be given the mandate to govern the country.
Its chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, said Tuan Ibrahim is an experienced figure and among those capable of leading the nation.
In contrast, PAS central committee member Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah asserted that the party is no longer a mere sidestep in PN but its main pillar.
“We can no longer be regarded as a ‘tongkat’. We are the main pillar of PN,” he said in an interview with Berita Harian.
“Strategic decisions in PN cannot be made without taking into account PAS’s stand. This is evidence that we aren’t a mere supporter but the main player,” he added.
Holding 43 parliamentary seats, governing four states, and backed by decades of administrative experience, he said PAS is strongly positioned to lead not only the opposition coalition but also the country.
“The time has come for the people to give PAS a chance to lead the coalition and the country,” he continued, stating that a decision on the matter would be made collectively by PN’s top leadership.
According to him, what’s important is that PAS is now prepared and that they are confident to bring a new direction for the country.
“This narrative that PAS must be at the back must stop. The reality is that we have the most organised machinery, solid grassroots support and leadership that people have confidence in,” he pointed out. — Focus Malaysia
